Podľa správy Hongkongskej archeologickej spoločnosti sa v oblasti Tsuen Wan usadili ľudia už pred dvetisíc rokmi. V skorších časoch bola táto oblasť známa ako Tsin Wan (淺灣), čo znamená plytký záliv, a neskôr bola premenovaná na Tsuen Wan. Ďalší názov, Tsak Wan (賊灣, v hakka dialekte vyslovované ako tshet wan), pirátsky záliv, naznačuje, že sa v minulosti v blízkosti pohybovali piráti. Oblasť okolo Rambler Channel bola v skutočnosti známa ako Sam Pak Tsin (三百錢), čo doslova znamená tristo mincí. Podľa legendy musel každý, kto prechádzal touto oblasťou, zaplatiť pirátom tristo mincí.
